Did you know that Berlin is a monster-size capital? Eight times the size of Paris. And we are on the autobahn headed that way today with Gisela and Peter.
One of the first sites we see coming into the city is the Victory Column (Sieggesäule) which celebrates Germany's victory over France in the Franco-Prussian war in 1870/1871. .
Where to begin... we took off on Day 1 walking toward to the Brandenburg Tor (Gate) along the famous street Unter den Linden just to get a look. The Brandenburger Tor was once the symbol of the divided city. It was designed in 1789 and is at the extreme west of Unter dem Linden (tree). The originals were all cut down for the wood during the war for firewood and eventually replanted after the war. The wall that divided the East and the West was built right in front of the gate. The wall. To just split a city in two... family and friends separated. Two totally different worlds. Should be eye opening for how different it was for those living in the East versus the West. Along the way we saw the Fernsehturm (TV tower) highest structure in Europe at 1207 feet. The Berliner Dom church built in the 19th century. Went by Museum Insel where there are 5 museums. We had curry wurst... bicycles everywhere.
